Vertigo Park) whose just discovered comic novel is Joycean in conception--it all takes place forward one night as our everyman hero Tad makes the orbeds of seven pre-Christmas parties he's been invited to. Tad makes a congenial companion, and there is a great deal of suitable writing in this book. Nevertheless, the necessary tone of cosmic--and comic--desperation get away froms the author, by the fifth party I was ready to walk home and watch Jay Leno.
