Creating community
About a year ago four Atlanta women chatting around a dining expanse table stumbled across a gap in their lives. Missing from the Atlanta exhibition was a safe haven for black lesbians and bisexual women From that discussion sprang a series of telephone calls from friend to friend that l to a town hall--style meeting to discuss creating a lesbian support group
abroad of the meeting came something on the same level more powerful and lasting--a collective of women committed to doing suitable works in Atlanta. The cluster took the name Folami, an African word for "respect and honor me" "That name," said Folami president Etawe, "rang faithful for a lot of women"
In its first year Folami sponsored a toy drive, "adopted" a family for Christmas, celebrated sisterhood at Atlanta Black Pride, and created a service welcoming newcomer to the city. As Folami embarks onward its second year, members promise equable more good deeds. "The desire is there to be not at home and doing things," Etawe said.
